If you want to perform a thermal analysis of bulb heating, including flow pattern, by using simulation  the CFD simulation software NOGRID points is an excellent choice. Based on a geometric model - either imported from your CAD system or created with our CAD preprocessor COMPASS - you can generate a computational model of a specific geometry. Compared to mesh-based methods, this approach significantly reduces setup time and allows you to evaluate the thermal behavior in advance.

Heat can be transferred either through conduction and/or radiation or convection via fluid flow. All heat transfer mechanisms can also be coupled within the simulation. In the example below, the airflow inside a bulb is shown. The screw thread is modeled as a solid (metal), where heat is transferred solely by conduction. A heat source is applied at the tip of the heater, causing the temperature at that point to rise over time. Because the air density depends on the temperature, the air starts to move after a while.

For the heat transport within the air we used a P1 radiation model together with the solving of the usual energy balance (heat conduction and convection). This model is an example of using two different materials and computes the flow pattern in the air and the coupled temperature in both materials.

NOGRID points can perfectly be used for designing and problem solving of heat transfer cases. It allows for precise prediction of the temperature front as well as heating and cooling rates. NOGRID points helps to understand the flow by visualization of the mass, momentum, and heat transfer of single and multiple phases. You receive integral quantities which you can use to analyze the heat exchange efficiency.

Capabilities of NOGRID points CFD software

NOGRID combines capabilities to handle free surface flow and moving parts within the domain, allowing the simulation of any conceivable geometry and operating modes such as

  • computation is in full 3D solving complete Navier-Stokes-Equations
  • easy and intuitive setup for thermal analysis cases
  • free definable material properties by equations or curves
  • evaluation of chemical reactions and corresponding heat source terms
  • open or closed domains including inflow and outflow areas (non-batch mode)
  • moving of parts and flexible thermal contact behaviour

Nogrid's strengths

Particular strengths of NOGRID's fluid flow CFD software are the rapid preprocessing (no fluid grid needs to be generated, only the boundary mesh, inner finite points are generated automatically depending on User setting initially and during computation), and the outstandingly short computation time even for complicated cavities.
As you can see in the image below, the boundary of the geometry still requires a mesh to allow the interior finite points to detect the boundary. The boundary must therefore be meshed and the finite points inside are automatically generated during the simulation controlled by User specifications.
