If you want to perform a simulation of cooling a mainboard, you can use CFD software NOGRID points.

Computer-aided thermal analysis is already widely used today. As a result, development cycles for heat dissipation and cooling concepts can be shortened considerably. In this study, an air flow is computed that cools a computer mainboard consisting of several devices. The mainboard is modeled as a thermally conductive solid so that heat can be absorbed and released. The air flow is a forced flow, such as that caused by fans.

Based on the geometrical model which can either be imported from your CAD or created with our CAD preprocessor COMPASS you can generate a computer model of a specific geometry in a very short time (compared to mesh-based methods) and see its thermal characteristics in advance.

The heat within the solid is transferred by heat conduction and thermal contact between air and solid is assumed to be ideal in this study. The heat within the air can be transferred by heat conduction and/or by heat radiation and by convection. Convection means, that the heat is transported by the flow of the fluid. You can couple also all kinds of heat transfer mechanisms. In the example on the left side the mainboard and its devices are cooled by surrounding air and the devices are homogeneous bodies with heat source terms inside. In the solid only heat transport by conduction is computed. Since both a solid and a fluid are in contact and thermally interact here, one also speaks of a multi-phase flow.

NOGRID points can perfectly be used for designing and problem solving of heat transfer cases. The speed of the temperature front and the cooling/heating rate can be predicted. NOGRID points helps to understand the flow by visualization of the mass, momentum and heat transfer of single and multiple phases. You receive integral quantities which you can use to analyze the heat exchange efficiency.

  • computation is in full 3D solving complete Navier-Stokes-Equations
  • easy and intuitive setup also for FSI (Fluid-Structure-Interaction) cases

  • evaluation of chemical reactions and corresponding heat source terms
  • open or closed domains including inflow and outflow areas (non-batch mode)
  • moving of parts and flexible thermal contact behaviour

Nogrid's strengths

NOGRID's particular strengths are the rapid preprocessing (no fluid grid needs to be generated, only the boundary mesh, inner finite points are generated automatically depending on User setting initially and during computation) and the outstandingly short computation time even for complicated cavities.
As you can see in the image below, the boundary of the geometry still requires a mesh to allow the interior finite points to detect the boundary. The boundary must therefore be meshed and the finite points inside are automatically generated during the simulation controlled by User specifications.
