The simulation of mixing in a disc stirrer with round bottom can perfectly be performed with NOGRID software. The inclined blade or disc stirrer in this case study is a tangentially conveying stirrer type and is mostly used for low-viscosity media. The container shapes often have different degrees of slenderness and bottom shapes. This stirrer has a round bottom (drum bottom) and is suitable for pressure-resistant stirring processes. Furthermore, fluid-dynamic dead zones are avoided here by the continuous transition to the cylindrical container wall. Containers with low slenderness levels, such as in this case study, tend to be made for small volumes. The disc stirrer does not have a pronounced conveying effect, as the contents of the container are only moved tangentially, but a trombe is formed.

Mixing is an important part in the healthcare industry and appears in processes such as dispersion of two or more liquid, powdery or gaseous ingredients, deagglomeration to avoid lumps and homogenization of mixtures.

Improve product performance and reduce costs

Mixing simulation can help to understand the flow in an agitator, to quickly suggest improvements to construction and operation parameters and to reduce production and maintenance expenses.

Compute any conceivable agitator geometry with mixing simulation

NOGRID offers a wide range of rheology models including those found in chemical industry. NOGRID's unique abilities to handle moving parts in the fluid domain allow the simulation of any conceivable agitator geometries and operation modes such as

  • rotating and counterwise rotating agitator blades, possibly moving up and down periodically at the same time
  • overlapping operation ranges of moving parts as found in twin-screw agitators
  • free surfaces at inlets or for different fluid levels or for fast rotating agitators with high centrifugal forces

Benefit of very short computation time

The particular strengths of NOGRID's meshless CFD software are the rapid preprocessing (no grids need to be generated) and the outstanding short computation time even for complicated moving parts commonly found in agitators.

NOGRID unites abilities to handle free surface flow and moving parts in the domain. This leads to the following advantages:

  • computation is in full 3D solving complete Navier-Stokes-Equations
  • easy and intuitive setup mixing cases
  • free definable material properties by equations or curves,
  • evaluation of the mixing quality
  • open or closed domains including inflow and outflow areas (non-batch mode)
  • moving of the mixers in any direction

Nogrid's strengths

NOGRID's particular strengths are the rapid preprocessing (no fluid grid needs to be generated, only the boundary mesh, inner finite points are generated automatically depending on User setting initially and during computation) and the outstandingly short computation time even for complicated cavities.
As you can see in the image below, the boundary of the geometry still requires a mesh to allow the interior finite points to detect the boundary. The boundary must therefore be meshed and the finite points inside are automatically generated during the simulation controlled by User specifications.
