The simulation of the water flow in a flushing toilet can be performed using the CFD software NOGRID points. Based on a geometric model - either be imported from your CAD or created with our CAD preprocessor COMPASS - you can quickly generate a computational model of a specific geometry. Compared to mesh-based methods, this significantly reduces setup time and allows you to analyze the flow behavior in advance.

In the case study, the toilet is initially empty and gradually fills with water. As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the water forms a thin free-surface film that begins to break up into smaller fragments at an early stage. These thin, fragmented structures require high resolution (= a large number of finite points), which results in longer computation times compared to viscous flows where separation typically does not occur. 

Additionally, the Langrangian solver was used for this simulation. At high flow speeds and resolutions, the time step size is small. While not demonstrated in this example, the NOGRID software also supports the inclusion of rigid bodies in th fluid domain (see FSI 3D Water Filter in a Pipe).

Capabilities of NOGRID points CFD software

NOGRID points is ideally suited for the design and problem solving of free surface flow applications. It enables accurate prediction of flow patterns, flow fronts, and flow velocities. NOGRID points  provides valuable insights into flow behavior through the visualization of mass, momentum, and - if applicable - heat transfer in both single-phase and multi-phase systems. The software also delivers integral quantities that can be used to evaluate the efficiency and performance of the process. 

NOGRID combines capabilities to handle free surface flow and moving parts in the domain and allows the simulation of any conceivable geometry and operating modes such as

  • computation is in full 3D solving complete Navier-Stokes-Equations
  • easy and intuitive setup also for FSI (Fluid-Structure-Interaction) cases
  • free definable material properties by equations or curves
  • evaluation of chemical reactions and corresponding heat source terms
  • open or closed domains including inflow and outflow areas (non-batch mode)
  • moving of parts and flexible thermal contact behaviour

Nogrid's strengths

Particular strengths of NOGRID's fluid flow CFD software are the rapid preprocessing (no fluid grid needs to be generated, only the boundary mesh, inner finite points are generated automatically depending on User setting initially and during computation), and the outstandingly short computation time even for complicated cavities.
As you can see in the image below, the boundary of the geometry still requires a mesh to allow the interior finite points to detect the boundary. The boundary must therefore be meshed and the finite points inside are automatically generated during the simulation controlled by User specifications.
