Simulation Forging Ship Shaft
The simulation of forging of a ship shaft can perfectly be performed with NOGRID CFD software.
Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. Forging can be classified according to the temperature at which forging is performed: cold, warm or hot forging.
In this case study the hot metal body is forged by two opposite hammers. The metal is computed as a viscoplastic material, where the viscous part is dominant. As shown in figure 4 the initial body is far away from the geometry of the final product (a ship shaft) and the transformation to the final geometry requires a lot of pressing steps (or hammer blows).
In contrast to purely elastic bodies, a viscoelastic material has an elastic and a viscous part. The viscosity of a viscoelastic material gives the body a strain rate dependence over time. Purely elastic materials do not dissipate energy when a load is applied and then removed. However, a viscoelastic material dissipates energy when a load is applied and then removed. Viscoelastic behavior has elastic and viscous components modeled as linear combinations of springs and dampers, respectively.
If you want to compute forging proccesses then our meshless CFD software NOGRID points is a great choice. Based on the geometrical model which can either be imported from your CAD or created with our CAD preprocessor COMPASS you can generate a computer model of a specific geometry in a very short time (compared to mesh-based methods) and see its thermal characteristics in advance.
This model can give you a better understanding of the forging process and helps to improve your process regarding efficiency and costs. So, NOGRID points can perfectly be used for designing and problem solving for all kinds of forging. The thermal cooling and homogenizing, the temperature gradients and the cooling/heating rate can be predicted during the entire forging process. NOGRID points helps to understand the flow or displacements by visualization of the mass, momentum and heat transfer.
NOGRID unites abilities to handle stress-strain problems including moving parts in the domain and allows the simulation of any conceivable geometry and operation modes such as
- computation is in full 3D solving complete viscoelastic equations
- easy and intuitive setup thermal analysis cases
- free definable material properties by equations or curves
- evaluation of chemical reactions and corresponding heat source terms
- open or closed domains including inflow and outflow areas
- moving of parts and boundaries
Easy and fast modelling: Build geometry, mesh boundary, setup the case and start computation
